Scary backwards bits
Back to class tonight after a couple of weeks off, and I am now doing a mixture of Level 6 and 7 stuff, which is what I hoped would happen. Of course, I have passed everything bar the 3-turns in Level 6, but practice is always good! The really good thing is that this time we have a nice flat part of the rink, so no hurtling backwards and downhill around a hockey circle any more!
Today we covered:
Backward Chasses: It was truly lovely to do these on a flat circle. I was told to push more off my free foot for these and they are feeling better. I found that ensuring that I got the half a lemon in before pushing off really helped. I also need to ensure that my inside leg to the circle is also on a good outside edge.
3-turns: Well, I have been indundated with advice about these which is wonderful. It can be difficult to remember it all when I get on the ice though! I took somebody's advice about standing at the barrier, and doing the turn on a static leg which was good for feeling where I should be on the blade. As we had beginner Level 6-ers today, we also did these on two feet to start with, and I have to say that it is the first time I have even managed these on two feet (and quite well!) which has to be a big step foward. I also managed a backward glide out of a one-footed one for about (literally) a tenth of a second, but it's a start! The coach also pointed out that I am trying to "spot" these, like I used to do for pirouettes in ballet, and she has told me instead to keep my head always centred, so my head should only turn with my shoulders.
Backward Crossovers: The time for these finally arrived! Gosh, they are a bit scary when you start them aren't they?! The coach actually gave me a bit of a pep talk and told me that I need to have more confidence in myself. She says that I am always really centred over my blades and as she held my hands for me to do the crossovers, apparently she is not helping me at all. I know it's all in my head, but dammit, ice is scary! Sometimes the lightest of touch on your fingertips can make all the difference.
At the end of the session, I also spoke to the senior coach about patch ice. She is happy to sign-off the application form for me, so hooray, patch time is imminent! She has recommended (to the best of my memory) a patch on Tuesday evening, the lunchtime patches at the weekend and I think the Thursday evening patch. I am so excited about this! I will take the application form with me next Wednesday to be signed. I can escape from the little hockey goblins!

If it's your first time on a freestyle ("patch") session you might want to ask around about etiquette. Every rink is a little different.
At rinks in the US, the main points of freestyle session etiquette are 1) keep moving; don't stand around in the middle of the ice. If you need to think or whatever you should do it by the boards.. 2) people in a lesson have the right of way... 3) people doing a program runthrough have the right of way...4) Don't hog one spot on the ice for too long. If you want to work on a move in a specific spot, do it for 5 minutes or so then move on.
Like I said, though, every place is different. You might want to ask a coach or instructor, or just observe the behavior of the higher-level skaters.
